R.Kelly Denies All Accusations
This isn't the first time that R. Kelly has faced allegations of sexual abuse. Over the years, he's settled several sexual misconduct cases out of court, keeping those involved quiet by having them sign nondisclosure agreements.
In 2008, he was charged with making child pornography, but was found innocent in court. Numerous sources have reported that he regularly involves in sexual activities with minors and it is known that he married the artist Aaliyah when she was only 15 and he was 28. It is unknown if he was aware of her age since she falsified her records and listed herself as 18 on the marriage license.
Then in 2017, Buzzfeed published an article which indicated that families were concerned for their daughters because R. Kelly allegedly abuses them and holds them against their will, forcing them to participate in a sex cult. Then, Lifetime aired a documentary called "Surviving R. Kelly" which highlighted interviews from more than 50 people including alleged victims, former business associates, and family members. The backlash from the article and documentary was wide spread, with many radio stations banning R. Kelly songs.
In February 2019, the first ten charges were filed against R. Kelly, with prosecutors alleging that the sexually abused four victims, three of them while they were underage. The alleged abuse reportedly occurred over a span of several years, between 1998 and 2000. Kelly surrendered to Chicago police and has insisted that he is innocent.
This latest set of charges involves incidents that occurred in January 2010.
One Good Thing Has Come From The R. Kelly Sexual Abuse Scandal
If there can be any good found in a sexual abuse case it usually involves the increase in the number of sexual assault reports and that is exactly what has happened here. Since many of R. Kelly's alleged victims have come forward, there has been an increase in calls to sexual assault hotlines by 35%.
Sexual assault is known to be vastly under reported, often because victims suffer from feelings of shame and fear. Abusers are known to threaten victims into silence and since a majority of survivors know the person who assaulted them, this fear tactic can be quite effective.
Survivors of sexual assault can remain anonymous when pursuing legal action against their attacker, even if that person is rich and famous. With the help of an experienced attorney, survivors can obtain the compensation that they deserve. This compensation can help build a brighter future.
