Aly Raisman Sues USOC & USA Gymnastics For Ignoring Sexual Abuse

Aly Raisman is well known throughout the country for her gymnastic abilities and the numerous medals she won during the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. Today, she stands with more than 260 other individuals who have publically alleged that Larry Nassar sexually absued them.

Lawsuit Claims USOC & USA Gymnastics Knew Of Abuse

In a statement made by Raisman, she alleged that both the U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Gymnastics were fully aware of the ongoing sexual abuse taking place while gymnasts were under the care of Larry Nassar, who, prior to his conviction, worked as the team doctor for USA Gymnastics and has an osteopathic doctor at Michigan State University.

In the hundreds of cases filed against Nassar, plaintiffs all allege the same thing. While being treated for injuries sustained while practicing gymnastics, Nassar inappropriately touched and penetrated gymnasts. When the plaintiff questioned the appropriateness or expressed concern, he informed them that it was all part of their treatment - even though many could not understand how vaginal penetration could help with complaints such as hip or shoulder pain. Some of his victims were as young as six-years-old when they began under going his "treatments".

After working with USA Gymnastics since the 90's, Nassar was fired in 2015 after two gymnasts alleged sexual abuse at his hands and that's when the truth began to slowly trickle out. Although he initially denied the allegations against him, insisting that he was providing legitimate medical treatment, the FBI ultimately arrested him for possession of child pornography and his entire story unraveled.

At this time, he is currently serving 60 years for the federal charges placed against him and has also been sentenced to 40 to 175 years in a state prison.

But why did it take so long for anyone to determine that Nassar was committing abuse? According to Aly Raisman, USOC & USA Gymnastics knew but until their hands were forced, they did nothing to protect the young athletes in their care.

"I can no longer wait for for these organizations to do the right thing." said Raisman.
