April Is Sexual Assault Awareness Month

Since 2001, April has been deemed Sexual Assault Month and this year, following the #MeToo movement, survivors have more of a voice than ever before.

The Disturbing Facts

Sexual assault is widespread and sadly, a huge percentage of Americans will be impacted by this behavior in their lifetime. According to research:

  • 1/3 of all women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime
  • 1/6 of all men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime
  • 8% of all rapes occur while the victim is at work
  • Nearly half of all rape victims know their rapist
  • 63% of all sexual assaults are not reported to police
  • 90% of all campus sexual assaults are not reported to police
By raising awareness about sexual assault, victim blaming, and helping victims find their voice, many organizations, including Abuse Guardian, hope to reduce the number of attacks each year.

Anyone Can Become A Victim
It doesn't matter who you are, how old you are, what your skin color is, or what sex you are - anyone can become the victim of sexual assault or rape. Then, they often endure the second humiliation of victim blaming, where they are asked questions or endure comments which imply that they could have done more to stop their attack. This often includes questions like:

  • What were you wearing?
  • How much did you have to drink?
  • Did you say no?
The bottom line is, if the sexual contact is unwanted, it is unacceptable. If you have been hurt through sexual assault or rape you may be owed significant compensation which can help you plan for a brighter future. Contact our law firm today to learn more about how we can help.
